THE NFL HAS ISSUES

The NFL has issues. The issues include Goodell, staff salaries and its personal conduct policies.

If the reports are to be believed, Goodell wants a salary of $50 million dollars a year, a plane and lifetime insurance.

The salaries of the NFL are barely above minimun wage. How can the NFL justify paying the Commissioner this type of salary while barely paying the staff minimum wages? The staff certainly cannot support a family on the salaries they are paid. Perhaps there is something I do not know about why these salaries are so low. The NFL has support and income. It makes great profit from its contracts. It is like most American corporations; it does not share the profits with its staff or employees.

I like the pension structure and the way it protects its players. The salaries need improvement before they give a Commissioner this type of increase.

The personal conduct policy is a problem for me. It lacks due process. Players are not given right of confrontation of their accusers. This give a blackmailer a strong hand. They know the player will not be treated fairly by the NFL. This opens players up to extortion and gives them no protection for extortion attempts. Accusations are enough to destroy a player’s reputation. They cannot fight and the courts will not protect them. I do not think the NFL handles these issues well. Their rulings are arbitrary and capricious. The policy needs to change.

I agree with Jerry Jones in that the league needs to look at the role of the Commissioner. He acts like a Czar. Perhaps it is time for a change. Sometimes people can be in one place too long. Fresh air and sunlifht needs to enter a room to lighten it from time to time. It may be time for fresh air in the NFL.
