Racism in the legal profession–some thoughts

 In Uncategorized

People would be surprised to learn that the legal profession is one of the most racist organizations on earth.  Racism is institutionalized in the profession at all levels all the way to the Supreme Court. I was so blessed as a Black female to have a beloved mentor–Dean T.J. Gibson of the University of Texas Law School.  I was thinking the other day that without his love and support I would never have completed undergraduate school or law school.  When I was a student at UT/Austin, racism was strong.  Racism in grading was meant to destroy you and your ego.  When I entered law school the racism was so strong that it could be cut into pieces with a knife.  I do not know how we survived.  Students were so blessed to have Dean Gibson at the law school.  His goodness diffused any anger and bitterness one might have. He encouraged you to “do your best.”  He always found something special to highlight about you.  What a special person he was. He knew my strengths and weaknesses and made sure that I was prepared to face any obstacles.  He knew my needs better than I did.  What a special person he was. I remember the many times I called and talked to him about my problems.  He was always available to me. He was always thinking of others. In all the bad, there is also good.
