WE NEED COLEMAN YOUNG TYPE MAYORS
Large cities need Coleman Young type mayors to resolve trust and brutality issues.
Coleman Young was the Mayor of Detroit for many years. He had a zero tolerance for police brutality. He had a system in place to deal with the issues. First, he had an internal affairs department that did not whitewash and participate in cover-ups for the department. If you wrote Coleman Young or his police chief, someone would be at your home within three days to talk to you. They would do a private investigation of their own and report to you about the result. They did not eliminate brutality but there were no public murders of citizens. Citizens knew it would not be tolerated in Detroit. Coleman was not going to whitewash your conduct. Police officers were given diversity training. There were police departments in every area of town. Police attended community meetings on a regular basis. There was an open exchange between police and the community. Detroit was known as the murder capitol at one time. However, you felt safe walking the streets. My home was not burglarized for more than twenty eight years. There were no burglaries on a daily basis of homes. If you knew the burglar, he was going to be arrested. In contrast, Houston and other large cities are non responsive to citizens. You can report burglaries and have witnesses and the burglars will not be arrested. The Houston Police and their crisis teams are untrained and incompetent. There needs to be a return to the Coleman Young type mayors who had a presence in Community Watch Neighborhood groups and in the community. Trust would return to the community. His zero tolerance for abuse is much needed.
