MARCH FOR OUR LIVES—SOME THOUGHTS
The women’s march and the student’s march showed the world that our democracy is strong. Americans will not be divided by anyone. Americans come together when there is a crisis. The political system and guns are a crisis for America. We will unite to save the lives of children and our democratic system.
I tried to think about why I had not written about the students. I am so proud of them and what they are trying to accomplish. As I heard them speak, tears were running down my face and I could not control them. Those students had tapped into an emotion for fairness and change that we spent years trying to accomplish. I remember the sit-ins, teach-ins, marches, the dogs, the soldiers being brought in to segregate the schools in America, the bombings of churches, schools, burnings, massacres. We cannot forget the assassination of JFK, MLK, RFK, Malcolm X,Medger Evers, murders of civil rights workers. The pain of loss was numbing at times. We sometimes lived in constant fear in America. I moved away and became somewhat mobile and affluent. I returned to Texas and was reminded that nothing had changed.
Ever since the women’s march in 2016, I have felt proud to be an American. The unity of women and other citizens gave me hope for Democracy. These students should inspire and give us all hope for the future of America. I heard their message. We should all be proud of them and support their efforts to bring about gun reform and change in America. I got inspiration to continue fighting for social justice. THEY GIVE ME HOPE FOR THIS COUNTRY!
