Kaepernick Has Started a Movement
Bernie Sanders tried to start a revolution but Colin Kaepernick has started a movement to highlight injustice and police brutality. The constitution and principles of this country are not being applied to and realized by all of its citizens. This needs to change.
In the Democratic Primary, Bernie Sanders reminded us of the issues that no one was speaking of that had been a part of this country’s fiber since Robert Kennedy who used to say, “I see things that have never been an say why not?” Sanders reminded us that there is still inequality, a broken criminal justice system, too much money in politics, big banks that run wild and uncontrolled, a need for conservation, no resolution of the middle east issues, etc. Colin stood up for injustice and against police brutality that has been in existence since slavery. He stood up by sitting down or kneeling at the National Anthem. He reminded us that the principles that this country stands for are still not protecting all of its citizens. Black Lives Matter has been highlighting some of those issues and reminding us that nothing has changed and we are regressing to a past time that we fought against when we got the Civil Rights Act passed. The fight for equality and justice is not over. Colin Kaepernick in not standing up for the National Anthem has started a movement that has Junior Varsity, Varsity and college teams joining him in kneeling or not standing or standing with arms linked for the National Anthem. Athletes for social change is catching on since Colin started his conversation. Colin Kaepernick is to be commended for using his celebrity to start this conversation and highlight a need for social changes. His conversation is starting a movement that is growing. Some NBA players have stated that they need to have a response or addition to the conversation next season. This movement may grow into the revolution that Bernie Sanders was calling for in the Democratic Primary. Justice and equality and ending police brutality are worthy causes. We must never forget the words of Martin L. King, “True peace is not the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice. The time is always right to do what is right. Our lives begin to end when we become silent about things that matter.” Hats off to Kaepernick! May his support continue to grow. He had the courage to speak out.
