How Are We Answering Our Children?
My son was six years old when he asked me a question that I could not answer. Who is Ronald Reagan and how could grown ups elect someone like this? We did not have answers then and we do not have answers now.
I remember it as if it happened yesterday. My son came into the house, threw off his jacket and sat down at his computer.
“I need to find out something about this Ronald Reagan,” he said ” He is making our taxes too much. How could you let someone like this get elected. Did you not see that he was bad for the economy. He is making our taxes too much.”
From this moment forward he was interested in elections and history. He began to work in elections, became an aide to a senator and an interested citizen. I remembered this when I watched “The View” a few weeks ago. With tears in her eyes, one child stated, ” I do not know how someone like this could be elected as our President.”
I wanted to know what was affecting my son so much about Ronald Reagan. What had put a bee in his bonnet. His answer was simple. My five dollar weekly allowance will no longer allow me to buy what I want. My taxes have increased. How did you allow this man to increase my taxes? It was the economy for my son. He could no longer buy a He-man each week and save or but anything else. His taxes were too much. It was this simple for my six year old.Ronald Reagan is effecting my pocketbook and he must go. He wanted to know how adults could not see that Ronald Reagan was bad for the economy? He did not know anything about Republicans or Democrats, conservatives or liberals. It was his pocketbook. He could no longer buy what he used to buy. Reagan had to go when he affected his pocketbook.
The child two weeks ago was saying, “How can someone who expresses such bigotry, racism, mysogeny, and intent to discriminate based on religion be elected to President in America. His personal views are against our values as Americans. How did he get elected in spite of this? I did not have the answer for my son. We do not have the answer for this young girl last week. We must somehow find an answer and take some type of action to correct what has happened. Donald Trump is our President. Adults must find the answer to the questions of children. The answers must be found within ourselves.
